Established over 100 years ago in 1912, the Faculty is the oldest medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, and the top-rated on the continent. With a stellar reputation in education and research we were ranked 48th in the 2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
University rankings began to appear in the early 2000s in the wake of growing interest in the comparison of the quality of universities worldwide. Different ranking lists emphasise different qualities. The University of Helsinki has also been ranked differently on different lists. University rankings have been published since 2003, the first being the “Shanghai list”.Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) — (ARWU)The Shanghai list values Nobel Prizes and articles published in Nature or Science.Other prestigious ranking lists include (2004-)Times Higher Education emphasises the number of citations, but also values the reputation of research and teaching. (2010-)QS emphasises, for example, the relative share of international students and researchers, as well as places great value on the number of citations calculated from the Scopus database. (2007-)Taiwan emphasises the visibility of publications and, for example, the two-year h index. This benefits universities that teach medicine and the natural sciences, therefore accumulating citations at a rapid rate. (2009-) (2008-)
