I developed a “radar” of sorts that would let me focus on the book while still being aware enough of my surroundings to avoid running into anything or anyone. I would have one eye on my book and the other on what I was doing while I arranged my locker and backpack for my first few classes. I would read while I walked to my first class and keep my book out and open until class actually started.
