Masters Degree With Or Without Thesis

On the other hand, graduates of the Harvard Extension School who worked full-time while getting their master’s degrees might complain that the students who were able to go to school full-time had things too easy. Holding down a full-time job while maintaining the discipline to complete an online master’s degree from an academically rigorous school is very difficult. It is much harder to sit alone in a room late at night after work watching lectures and doing problem sets than it is to attend class with your peers. The skills that will let you pull that off will generally go a long way toward helping you succeed.

The Graduate School recognizes four options under which a student may pursue the master’s degree: with thesis, with report, with recital, and without thesis, report, or recital. The format of the report or thesis may range from the traditional document authored by a single student to a series of unrelated papers and/or journal articles with multiple authorship. Graduate School policy recognizes that approaches to the report or thesis vary across disciplines, and specifies only that the format chosen for students of a master’s program be consistent with practices of similar programs in AAU institutions. Reports or theses containing one or more papers or articles must include brief introductions and conclusions that put the work in context and an acknowledgement of any previous publication of each paper in another report, thesis, dissertation, or other venue. In the case of multi-authored papers a statement must be included explaining the contribution of the student to each paper. When papers or articles that have been previously published are included the report or thesis must include permission(s) of the copyright holder(s) for reproduction in the report or thesis. The supervising committee should review the stated contributions and be satisfied that the student’s collective contribution to the multiple-authored papers or articles is sufficient to represent a report or thesis.

Can a master degree without a thesis lead to a doctoral degree?

Harvard does offer degrees where the majority of the work can be done online. If you are interested in a college like University of Phoenix or Kaplan, I would highly suggest you look at the return on investment for those degrees. Even if you ignore ROI, last time I checked Harvard Extension was actually less expensive than University of Phoenix in tuition costs.

Hi Mark, this was a wonderful article! I’ve been looking into the program and to hear a previous students point of view is inspiring. I looked on the Universities website and couldn’t find any info on the diplomas being in Latin. At least any current articles. I’m looking to get my masters in Liberal Arts- would my diploma also be in Latin? I like the tradition but almost dread not having it translated to English. Do you know anything about this?

Hi Mark,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Out of curiosity, would you know when Harvard started awarding online Master degrees? I am very interested in this program and love the fact that it emphasizes classroom ability for its admission criteria. Back when I was applying for schools in 2006, online degree opportunities were very limited.

Master of Arts in Sociology. Non-Thesis Option

This post is wonderful. However, you mentioned only 3% actually graduate. I’m looking into Digital Media IT Masters, and I feel I’m qualified to complete this masters considering my experience and education. These percentages make me nervous though. Would you say the percentage that graduate is so low because of the difficulty or just the lack of interest? I’d just hate to spend thousands on a degree that I’m unlikely to finish…
