Structure similarity between and phthalic anhydride encouraged us to investigate the reaction of with compounds bearing active methylenes namely diethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and acetylacetone in presence of zinc chloride, Thus new compounds and were synthesized. Those compounds were used as precursors for the synthesis of various spiroheterocycles.

Luminescent metal coordination compounds have attracted considerable attentionfor their potential applications in electroluminescent displays (Xu, etal. 2008). Among many coordination compounds, ZnII metalcomplexes areof great interest due to their facile synthesis, tunable emission color andgood electroluminescent (EL) properties (Son, et al. 2008).Recently,we reported blue fluorescent zinc(II) complexes with nitrogen-containingligand to develop luminescent materials (Seo, et al. 2009; Kimet al., 2007a; Kim et al., 2007b). In an extension of this study,here we prepared novel zinc(II) complex withN,N-diethylethylenediamine and structurally studied. In thetitle compound, the ZnII atom is coordinated by two N atoms of one bidentatediethylethylenediamine ligand and two O atoms of two acetate anions in adistorted tetrahedral geometry. The acetate ligands are asymmetricallycoordinated to Zn atom with two different C—O distances of 1.234 (4) and1.275 (4) Å. The dihedral angle between the N1/Zn1/N4 plane and O9/Zn1/O13plane is 83.11 (8) °. N—H···O hydrogen bonding links molecules into athree-dimensional network.
